So, you’ve been elected to the school board! This session will cover areas of possible liability for school board members. While school board members enjoy governmental immunity from most types of liability, lawsuits may be filed naming trustees as parties. When does serving as a school trustee give rise to potential exposure to civil legal liability? Further, violations of state ethics laws, the Open Meetings Act and other legal violations can give rise to criminal liability. This session will explore the circumstances under which a trustee may be exposed to legal liability, and steps to take to effectively mitigate those risks.
Participants will acquire a deeper understanding of civil law immunity from suit, the role of the District’s liability insurance, and state law violations that may give rise to civil and criminal penalties for elected officials.
